Tom has an extensive background in the clinical treatment of children and adolescents as well as adults. He completed his graduate practicum in 2002 at Yale University under child psychologist and 2008 American Psychological Association (APA) president Dr. Alan Kazdin.; while at Yale Tom worked extensively on the assessment and behavioral issues of children and adolescents experiencing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder. |
In 2003 Tom went to work for Saint Francis Hospital performing treatment in an emergency treatment Partial Hospitalization facility with children and adolescents experiencing a wide range of psychological/psychiatric disorders and behavioral issues. After completing almost three years at Saint Francis Tom went on to work for Natchaug/Hartford Hospital where he aided in implementation of a state funded substance abuse program for individuals being released from prison. While employed at Natchaug Hospital, Tom also worked in a clinical setting with adults experiencing psychological difficulties. Here he conducted group psychotherapy as well as individual therapy and crisis prevention.
In 2004 Tom decided to open up a part time practice of his own “New England Behavioral Health”. The practice’s primary focus geared toward children and adolescents soon opened up its doors to treating individuals of all ages and was an immediate success. In early 2006 the practice became a full time entity and has gained an outstanding reputation for it’s treatment approaches.
Tom’s philosophy is rooted in empathy and the understanding of individual differences, learning by past experiences (without losing oneself in them) and making positive changes in thinking in order to live productively and contently in the hear and now.

Andrea Schear is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with twenty years of experience as a Child, Adolescent and Family therapist. Andrea has the innate ability to form relationships and connect with people regardless of their age. Whether she’s on the floor with a toddler playing in a castle, in the middle of a serious board game with an 11 year old, doing a relaxation meditation with an anxious adolescent, reawakening the playfulness in parents, or listening to the weekly challenges of a depressed adult suffering from depression, you feel her warmth and understanding. |
In her work with teens and adults Ms. Schear utilizes elements of cognitive behavioral therapy to promote rational thinking. She has extensive experience in treating adult and childhood depression, anxiety, trauma, sexual abuse and Bipolar disorder. She has also had great success in treating Reactive Attachment disorder; a childhood disorder many clinicians shy away from treating due to its lengthy course and often uncertain outcome.
Andrea believes that therapy is a significant vehicle through which great insights and new ways of being can be realized. She knows that children and young adolescents need to experience change through play rather than just sitting in a chair talking for their hour. She often uses her ten years of theatrical background as a ballerina for expressive play with children and role playing with adolescents. Andrea has a gift for using guided imagery and many other relaxation techniques to help people of all ages release stress, anger and feel a sense of calm that they have been searching for.
Andrea Schear is a welcome addition to New England Behavioral Health. We look forward to having her on staff as our resident child expert.
